A manual espresso machine has a lever that has to be pulled down to extract the espresso; an automatic machine has an electric pump to provide the pressure.
Choosing a fully automatic espresso machine to move beyond the manual machine is a step up in convenience, but also very expense. The price range is substantial from around a thousand dollars to many thousands of dollars.
One that I've seen mentioned on websites and on Youtube videos is the Diletta Bello from Italy. It costs $1700 in the U.S., $3,000 in Canada.
